Traffic Tickets
If you’ve received a traffic ticket, it could cost you more than you think. In addition to the fee for the traffic ticket, many tickets also come with points that count against your license – points that can increase your insurance premiums or even get your license suspended. That’s why it’s important to know your rights when it comes to traffic tickets.
Just because you are issued a ticket does not mean that you are guilty. While many people choose to simply pay their fine and accept the consequences of the ticket, there is another option. You can plead your innocence and challenge the evidence against you.
Remember, you are innocent until proven guilty. In many cases, it is possible to reduce your fine and lower the points on your license. In some cases, we can get your ticket dismissed.
After any traffic ticket in the Tampa area, call Amy Ruiz Law, PL. Our experienced traffic ticket attorney understands Florida’s traffic laws and will do everything she can to help you fight your ticket.

Understanding The Florida DMV Point System
In Florida, many traffic offenses are assigned a point value. When you get a ticket, these points go against your license for three years. If you incur too many points in a certain period of time, the Florida DMV will suspend your driver’s license.
Habitual Traffic Offenders
Under certain circumstances, you may receive a habitual traffic offender (HTO) suspension from the Florida DMV. This will suspend your driver’s license for a period of five years. After one year, you can apply for a hardship license, which will require you to attend traffic school and will cause a major increase in your insurance premiums.
However, if you act quickly, you may be able to reverse your HTO suspension before it goes into effect and thus avoid these negative consequences. An experienced Tampa suspended license attorney can file a motion to attempt to remove one or more of the traffic violations that caused your HTO suspension. However, these motions must be filed within a specific time frame, so it is in your best interest to act as quickly as possible.
If you’ve received notice of a Florida HTO suspension, call Amy Ruiz Law, PL, now to get help contesting your suspension before it goes into effect.
Causes For HTO Suspension
15 moving violations within five years, or three or more convictions (in five years) of any of the following offenses:
Manslaughter (motor vehicle involved) DUI, DWI or other alcohol-related convictions, Driving while your license is suspended or revoked, Driving a commercial motor vehicle while disqualified, Failure to stop and render aid in the event of a motor vehicle crash, Any felony where a motor vehicle is used in its commission.
After one year from the effective date of the revocation, a driver may apply for a hardship license through their local Administrative Reviews Office. To obtain a hardship license, the driver must submit proof of an Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) school completion and pay a reinstatement fee, along with any other applicable license fees. A hardship license restricts driving to employment or business purposes only.
If the state of Florida has labeled you a habitual traffic offender, don’t give up. You can fight this designation if you act quickly.
